I noticed some white spots on the edge of the fin of one of my koi, is this something to be concerned about? It is about a 10 month old koi we have had for about 6 months.
Jodi
How big are the spots? Like a grain of salt or bigger? It could be a parasite! Yikes...... I need more info.
Spring can be a tough time of year on pond fish. Cold water, little to no food, hibernating for several months.........Their immune system is very low which can make them an easy target for parasites.
The best thing to do is to catch the fish and bring it to Daryl's Pet Shop and have a biopsy done to determine what exactly is going on with your fish. It's easy and painless. Catching the fish and transporting will be the the toughest task!
Once we can determine what the problem is, then we can suggest the proper treatment.
If the spots are as big as salt.............EASY FIX! We Elevate the level of Salt in your pond and as the water temperature gets warmer, your problem will fade away!
The ball is in your court. Let me know.
Good Luck,
Some how we caught the fish on Monday only to find out no one was at the pet shop to check him for us. We have him in a large bucket and have done the salt thing until Saturday when we can bring him in. Also out of the coldwater bacteria, [see winter ponds] what can we pick up on Saturday? Jodi
Holy cow you don't mess around!
I thought we would correspond one more time before you made a move. I am super impressed you got right down to business to get the biopsy done! Most people drag their feet.........
As I said I thought I would have another opportunity to speak with you before you took the fish to Daryl's and I would of warned you about Leslie's days off.
I spoke to Leslie about your fish. How did you fish take to the Tricide Neo dip? We have had wonderful results with this product treating open wounds.
Leslie told me that the biopsy results didn't reveal any parasites. In a perfect world when doing a biopsy on a fish to better understand if you have any pathogens (parasites) in you pond, we biopsy three fish.
Yes, I know it's a pain but three fish is the minimum number of fish to biopsy (by a world renowned Koi Vet) in order to have a strong conviction as to what is going on in your pond.
Since we only had the opportunity to biopsy one of your fish, we don't have a conclusive opinion as to just what exactly is going on. SO, we wait!
As the water warms up, we will need to keep a close eye on your fish collection to see if you problem improves or gets worse. If the problem progresses we will want to react quickly, biopsy three fish and treat the pond accordingly.
COLD WATER BACTERIA is promised to me by the middle of this week! We are doing a big contractors convention this week that I am going to show case the new bacteria line! I will comp you some for your patience and anticipation! PM me your contact numbers so I can get some to you as soon as I have it in my possesion!
Sincerely In Ponds,
Well I guess I figured we better do something so everyone doesn't get sick. We did the last dip this morning and sent him back with his pals.He still has some spots but he doesn't act like anything is wrong. He was right in the middle of the pack at feeding time. So we will watch everyone and hope for the best. I am so thankful for people like you and the people at Daryl's and Exotic. Always helpful and so kind. Many thanks, Jodi
It has been a week now and the fish seems to be doing great, looking great and none of the others are showing any signs of a problem.
Jodi
Thanks for the update. Spring has sprung in my town! The tree frogs and spade foot toads are singing up a storm! Lots of aquatic plants are pushing up and my fish are definately hungry!
Just keep a watchful eye on all your fish as the metabolism of everything kicks into gear.
Watchful Waterscaping!
