Hey, somebody just gave me 5 baby redslider turtles, i decided to keep them and threw them in my pond and set up some rocks to sit up on, what should i feed them, they have plenty of algae should i give them something else, they are a littel bigger than a quarter should i take them out and put them in a tank. i also have gold fish in my pond is this a problem?
Hey,
Baby sliders can be fun! Sound to me like you got some seriously tiny guys! Be careful they will fall prey to the simplest things! Cats and birds will be your biggest predator by day and then opossums, skunks and racoons at night!
They will eat some algae, small tiny fish (like mosquito fish or guppies) and I would suggest getting some floating pellets that have been formulated for baby turtles!
Goldfish in the pond should be no problem at all, provided you have plenty of filtration! Those baby turtles love to swim around and are seriously fun to watch!
I know you're in AZ so your winters are mild enought that you can keep them out over the winter but for people in more extreme climates I would suggest to bring them in over the winter for the first year or two just for precautions!
Did you find my turtle pond article on the message board that I published a couple of months ago? It should give you a couple of fun ideas.
Enjoy those semil-aquatic turtles, they sure can be fun!
No i didnt see it i will look though. Yah they are so much fun to watch and so cool. I love them.
Has anybody ever had problems with their turtles getting out of the water and crawling a way because I am constantly putting them back in the pond. Any suggestions?
Hey,
Turtles are definately wanderers! Here is a little paragraph from the Turtle Pond Construction Tips and Tricks Column that I wrote for the local newspaper.
Fencing is a mandatory consideration when building a pond for these four legged creatures. Turtles love to wander! If you have two males and they get in a squabble or are hormonally eager for a girlfriend, one of them (or the two of them) may simply leave. Girl, looking for boy, boy looking for girl, grass is always greener, the excuses for leaving your pond, no matter how many amenities the pond possesses, are high; turtles wander!
