My son bought a Caspian Turtle for our pond. I researched a little on the web, but now we are trying to figure out if they can survive winter in our region (OH.), or if we should bring them in. I say them as our first one disappeared and we thought maybe a coon got her so we bought him another one and lo and behold that night she came back. The female is very docile and adventurous and the new male is a bit apprehensive until feeding time. We have 5 Orandas in the pond as well and they all seem to get along fine. If anyone knows anything about the Caspians I would love to hear from you. We have been told so many different things from several local pet shops so we are not sure what to believe. My questions are winterizing them, breeding issues, food likes and dislikes. Thanks in advance!
I don't know anyone that has ever kept this turtle. I wonder if they are legal here in California. I will have to ask my reptile wholesaler if they are available to us.
It is an interesting looking guy! Once you get the answers to those burning questions, please post them here on our pond message board so that we may all learn from your experience.
Thanks,
All we have found out so far is that these turtles hail from Iraq and Israel and are becoming extinct in Northern Africa. One site I found said they are the only known turtle in Iraq. I honestly do not even know if they are legal in Ohio but apparently the place where we bought the male farm raises them. I just cannot find out about what they like to eat, breeding habits and winterization, if possible. I am still researching and I hope we will find the answers. Will definitely keep all posted. Thanks!
