I am a pond virgin looking for a clue. I have a 4x6 pond 30" deep. I bought a basic kit which has a bio filter with "bio balls" that feeds into the pump. Originally we had the fountain attached but we were loosing water as the pump was too strong and splashing water all over. I used the diverter to circulate the water around in stead of up. I did add "Jungle" brand pond clear zyme as directed but still ended up with dirty water. We get about 6 hours of full sun. My problems are dirty water, brown and green in color, with green algae on the rocks which line the pond. I have 2 lillys and one other small plant in the shallow end. I also just added six fish as a friend had to get rid of them. I do not want the koi to die. I have no Idea what is needed from start to finish. Some say I need a uv light some say no way? Can someone reccomend a book or link? Sorry this is long but I need lots of info and fast. I did not expect to have fish yet! Thanks - Craig
Craig,
Sorry for the delayed follow up. I have been out of town for a couple of weeks and didn't delagate the message board to anyone as I thought I would have time on my trip to manage it myself.
It was a business trip in Savannah, Georgia and the 110 degree and 80% humidity levels whipped me out.
Fill me in on where you are at in your problem solving and I will make recommendations according to your existing situation.
Thanks,
The Pond Digger
Everything seems to be working great right now. I cleaned the filter out which was pretty dirty. I did not expect to have to clean it after only a couple of weeks. I guess it got so bad so fast mainly because the pond was new and it was the initial cleaning. I also put pond clear chemicals in and I am assuming that helped also. It took just over a week and the pond is looking very clear. I was mainly concerned about the koi and comets as I know the space is too small for them. I plan on making the pond bigger and deeper next weekend. I need to be prepaired for winter. It is hard to know who's opinion to go with as everyone's is different. UV light or not? Is my filter the right size? Approx 16"L x 12"W x 4"D with bio balls on bottom and two layers of "matting". How best to be ready for winter as I am in NJ? Anything you can tell me and any links or books would be a great start. My girlfriend loves the pond and next year wants to make a large swimming pond with fish if we can afford it. That is a whole nother learning curve I am sure and really want to be prepaired for that! Thanks - Craig
