The Pond Digger
We did a 11 x 16 dog pond several years ago and all is well still to this day.  No extra underlay, mini biofalls, std skimmer, larger stones and a couple larger shelfs for approach and exit.

Fish is a must, not only for the ecosystem but for the dogs to chase around!  We did some great fish tunnels before we even knew what a fish tunnel was.  The funny thing is we didn't make the fish tunnels a standard for a year or two later!  Imagine that!

The trick to the pond was that we built the water feature while the dogs and the wife were on vacation for three months, we installed in June.  The interesting thing is that the pond had three months in the peak growing season for the plants to become established and the fish to find there bearing!

My suggested secret to success is to keep the dogs out for a little bit to have the pond establish itself if possible.  At least that's my dog gone experience.
Happy Pondering,

Hi again. It's been awhile since I've posted and thought I'd stop in. So it's ok for a dog to jump in now and again? We just got a pit bull/boxer puppy and she loves the pond. Other that making her smell like a pond, I guess there is no problem with her getting her feet wet now and then. :O)
Her first day out in the back yard was hysterical to say the least. Running around in circles and jumping in the water falls was quite entertaining. It was only a matter of time before she fell in, but she got out on her own with no problem. I just hope the koi didn't get traumatized.

No harm at all with your dog getting in and out of your pond. Just be sure to offer your fish a cave to hide in and don't leave the back door open when otherwise you may have a muddy floor to clean up! Big Grin
