Last year about this time I had reports of several sightings of the nasty Blue Herons stalking fish ponds in our area! Well I do my best to keep good notes for our R & D department!
It was September in 2006 when this happened and I immediately wrote our a report and sent it out to everyone I knew! Oddly enough it was quite possibly one of my most reponded too letter that I had ever written! It blew me away.
It seemed like it was an epidemic! The Blue Herons seemed to be at everyones home! First let me tell you that I have taken the time to write out a very lenghty piece that we will be putting up on a webpage in the next week or two but didn't want to wait that long to let everyone know that the Blue Herons are out in full force at this time of the year!
So be Careful! Take every precaution to protect your fish!
I will give you a little taste of the latest information I have gathered this year for our record of R & D. We have reports of a Blue Heron hunting well into the evening on the week of the FULL MOON!
Yes, that's right well into the evening! I'm talking, 10:30 at night on a full moon when it's nice and bright outside and the underwater lights are still on in your pond makes for a nice environment for the hungry Blue Heron that didn't quite get his fill for the day!
Suggestion: If you are in bed and looking to catch some Z's by 10pm each night then I would suggest that the timer on your underwater lights be in the OFF position by that time too! No sence in making it easy for the crafty Blue Heron to eat your fish!
Stay tuned and on the look out not only for the Blue Heron but also for my new piece on Predator Control and The 2007 Blue Heron Warning Report. It should make you cringe and at the same time make you laugh out loud! (At my expense!)
