We are getting alot of the fire ash in our pond from the Orange County fire that is trying to make it over the hill to Corona. Is this something to worry about for our pond?

Ash in the pond is definately not fun! The ash from the fire will affect your PH if the ash is SUPER HEAVY. The fires we had five years ago locally were much harder on our ponds locally.

I suggest to pond owners very close to the fire zones to run down to the local hardware store and pick up a heavy duty blue tarp. Drape it over the pond tight if possible with one side lower than the other to keep the ash from piling up in the middle of the tarp. This method works extremely well, keeping a great deal of ash out of the pond.

The ash from wood is typically your least concern. When homes, structures and automobiles are being destroyed by fire then you have to be much more careful. The ash from an auto, drywall, roofing material, paint and so on have the potential to be a problem for your pond. Several small water changes are suggested to homeowners close to the fires zones experiencing extreme amounts of ash hitting their ponds.

Any ponds that have had ash fall out from the recent fires could use a good filter cleaning and heavy innoculations of powdered bacteria & enzymes daily for a couple weeks. The beneficail bacteria and enzymes will break down the residual ash in the bottom of your pond, especially for pond with gravel.
