The other night about 2 am my dog wanted to go outside. While I was waiting for him to return I was looking out at the pond and there it is with the lights on and I could see the fish passing in front of the lights. Well I think, doesn't this send a message to the passing heron "Open for midnight snack??"" Just a thought, I know if I was on my way home and my favorite food was all lit-up I might just turn in and order up a snack.Lights all night? Is this a good idea? Jodi
I'm not positive, but I think the Heron's "feeding" times are mainly dusk and dawn... I don't think they are known to hunt in the middle of the night...
Goldiehawn is right that the Heron's feeding times are MAINLY at dusk and dawn. HOWEVER................
With our latest findings on the Blue Herons hunting on the Full Moon until 10:30 PM. If you haven't read my POST Moonlight Pond Tour peice yet, I'll fill you in. We had a visit from a Giant Blue Heron on Saturday night at our Jack-O-Lantern pond display! He landed right in a tree near the pond with tour goers hanging around the pond! Talk about nerve!
I am suggesting that you turn the lights off from your timer earlier in the evening. You can over ride the lights to stay on longer when you are out by the pond if you want.
I actually have a couple transformers on my pond. One transformer runs the waterfall lights and the other runs the pond lights! FUNNY YEAH?
I didn't plan it that way on purpose but running two transformers on your pond is a good solution for the pond owners that want to view their waterfalls all lit up from the house each night. That at least NOT attract the heron to your pond at night!
There is actually a NIGHT HERON that is much smaller than the Monster Blue Heron that many of you may have encountered. The Night Heron because of it's smaller frame can't eat as large of fish but can certainly do some damage and is rightfully called NIGHT heron for a reason.
