Arrowhead Christian planting garden in memory of student killed by a drunken driver
REDLANDS - A memorial garden has been established at Arrowhead Christian Academy in honor former student Nathan Heavilin, who was killed in a traffic accident on Feb. 10, 1983.
On Feb. 9, the project was led by Eric Triplett of Exotic Aquatics in Redlands and included 20 student volunteers from the school Key Club and student council. Project coordinator Laurie Hicok supervised. The Exotic Aquatics crew and student volunteers worked from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to complete the Pondless® waterfall.
Nathan, a basketball team member who also played trumpet and sang in the school choir, was going home from an Arrowhead Christian basketball game when the accident happened.
The garden, which will be named "Nate's Place," will be dedicated in this month. George Jorritsma, a member of the Arrowhead Christian Academy board, is landscaping the memorial garden.
Roses will be featured to underscore the title of the book "Roses in December" written by Nathan Heavilin¹s mother, Marilyn. The book was written to help others cope with grieving and the loss of a loved one. Marilyn will speak at the garden¹s dedication next month.
In addition to Nathan's parents, ACA administrators, board members, students, Exotic Aquatics, Redlands dignitaries and representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, will be in attendance. The Honor Choir is scheduled to sing at the dedication ceremony.
