Pond Skimmers are MECHANICAL PRE-FILTERS designed with the primary purpose of sweeping your pond's surface of wind blown debris. This sweeping action removes medium to small floating solids from the pond before they have a chance to become water logged and sink to the bottom of the pond. Wind blown debris that sinks to the bottom of the pond will otherwise become unsightly black sludge making your water quality bad for your fish and it fuels the rapid growth of unwanted algae! A well designed pond skimmer will come equipped with a large leaf debris net that is easy to remove, clean and replace. Additionally, well designed skimmer should have a secondary pre-filter in the form of a filter pad or better yet filter brushes, to capture finer solids that make it past the skimmer net.
These two forms of pre-filtration, a leaf net and filter brushes, capture medium to large solids BEFORE the pond pump and pond filter, protecting the pump and filter from getting clogged. Pre-filtration is important to every pond. Designed and maintained properly, pre-filtration will keep the pond's filter clean of heavy solids allowing the filter to process and convert clear water into clean water. A quality pond skimmer will give you the ability to house a submersible pond pump, come equipped with stainless steel hardware, be made of a durable plastic that can handle the freeze thaw cycle that Mother Nature bestows upon our ponds and of course be easy to disguise into the surrounding landscape.
The Pond Skimmers listed here are the same skimmers used in The Pond Digger Preferred Pond Kits. The Medium and Mini Skimmer make up approximately 90% of the pond installations and kits we see today. Often times on larger ponds the use of multiple Mini or Medium Pond Skimmers are planned into the pond's design plan to provide skimming action from different areas on the pond's edge for more effective surface skimming, especially on ponds surrounded by messy trees. An efficient Pond Skimmer is an essential element needed to reduce pond maintenance, that much is clear. The bottom line is: The Skimmer you choose should be easy to install, easy to maintain and stand the test of time!
